Create the Life You Imagine ~ April 2019
Entering the Heart Center
“Your body is your only home in the universe. It is your house of belonging in the world. It is a very sacred temple. To spend time in silence before the mystery of your body brings you toward wisdom and holiness.”
~ John O’Donohue
I had the opportunity this week to bring this beautiful quote from one of my favorite Irish priest-philosopher-poets, John O'Donohue, deep into my heart and soul. Last Friday I was blessed with the chance to go skiing in Breckenridge, Colorado, with my husband and four wonderful kids. It was one of those gloriously sunny spring skiing days and the mountains were alive and glistening with energy. The freedom and flow of skiing is one of my favorite things on the planet to do and I was so happy to have this opportunity to play in this beautiful nature with my family. Unfortunately, a momentary mishap ended in a collision with a tree and left me with nine broken ribs, a broken scapula and a punctured lung. Despite the unexpected ending to my magical day of skiing and the serious injuries to my body, all I could feel was the presence of love. I had a feeling of overflowing gratitude for my family that stood by with me under that tree with love and support, for the expert ski patrols and medics that treated me on the mountain and transported me down to the base, for the medical professionals and trauma surgeons that attended to me with such kindness and expert care in the hospital, and for the airlines that gave me that first class seat for a more comfortable ride home.
Part of the work we have been doing over the past several months is unfolding the incredible Mystery of living as beings that are both human and divine. We are learning to remember that we are bigger than our bodies and that we are Souls that are eternal emanations of the Divine intelligence of the Universe, and yet each of us has the unique experience of living and loving and discovering this Mystery by walking through the world in a human body. These bodies allow us to experience the beauty and grace of the natural world and the kindness and care and love of others. These amazing bodies let us feel the gentle touch of those we love, and take in the smell of homemade soup that is love in a bowl from my sister-in-law, and hear the sounds of laughter nearby from my favorite people in the world. And they also make us vulnerable to injury and illness and disappointment and loss and suffering.
But this week I am overwhelmed by the magic of this body. A body that can sustain such trauma and yet left to its own devices will heal broken ribs and scapulas and clear a damaged lung. Although I am a yellow personality that is hard wired to keep moving and to ignore my body's signals, through the grace of age and experience I am also learning to be as kind and gentle with my body as people have been with me, giving it time to rest and to do its healing work. I can appreciate the need for good, practical medical interventions, as well as the power of meditation and energy medicine to restore my body, mind and spirit to perfect balance and health.
Some people have said to me, "that's why you shouldn't ski, it's a dangerous sport." Yet I can't wait to heal my body and return next season to ski again. If we are going to live fully in this physical world we will risk our bodies and hazard our hearts, we will get to experience joy and exhilaration and pain and suffering, but this is the process of life. The spiritual teachers of all traditions remind us that life is not for cowards and that the real trick of a life well lived is to say yes to it all. Yes to the good stuff and yes to the hard stuff, knowing that we are always held and supported by our souls and that every experience is an opportunity to grow more fully into who we really are. It is what we pay attention to that matters. I could focus on the pain, on the difficulty of breathing, on the loss of mobility, on the inconvenience, on the need to be dependent on others (something yellow's don't love), or I can see all the care and all the kindness and all the love and all the blessings of family, and friends and strangers. I am blessed and a little battered this week, but my heart is overflowing with gratitude and grace.
The beautiful image above reminds me of the energy of love and grace moving around my fourth chakra and healing my heart, lungs, ribs and scapula, and I hope you all feel that energy around you as well for anything that needs to be healed in your life. Next week we will get back to work and move up to the fifth chakra as we start our exploration of the upper triangle.
Wishing you the blessings and light of the Soul, as you create the life you imagine.
