The Three Triangle Model: Making Connections

“There is an unseen life that dreams us, it knows our true direction and destiny. We can trust ourselves more than we realize, and we need have no fear of change.”

~ John O’Donohue

Let’s put together all that we have discovered about our higher operating system. First, remember that everything in the created world, including each of us, flows from the invisible energy of the Third Triangle of Spirit. The energy of Spirit is the energy of Pure Consciousness or Pure Awareness, and this energy is the source of All That Is. We can describe the energy at the apex of this triangle as both the point of Fullness and the point of Emptiness at the same time. Because it is the ground of all Being, it is full with every creative possibility in the Universe, and because Spirit emerges from the ever present now, it is empty of any need, attachment or desire that is bound to the past or the future. It is the neutral point of all power—a point of both potency and peace. As Spirit begins its descent toward matter, it creates the polarity of energies that support all Life. It creates the positive-active energy that we can think of as masculine energy or light, and the negative-receptive energy that we can think of as feminine energy or love. This energy system might sound like the physics of the atom, including neutrons, protons and electrons, and like atoms, it is the relationship among these energies that sets everything in the created world into motion. This Third Triangle models for us that everything arises from the source energy of cosmic relationship and that we are all co-existing and co-creating inside a cosmic whole.

What I love about this description of Spirit is that it includes both masculine and feminine energy at the core of all being. In Western faith traditions, God has most often been described using masculine pronouns and imagery, making it difficult to think about the more feminine qualities of God or Spirit. Fr. Bede Griffith, a Catholic monk who established an Ashram in India where he discovered a much deeper connection to the feminine energy of God, taught that for Christianity to come into its fullness it needed to recover the balance between the masculine and the feminine energy. He described it like this: “We take clay and make a pot, but it’s the empty space that makes it useful; and we take brick and mortar and make a house, but it’s the doors and windows and open spaces that makes it habitable.” Whether we are male or female, for those of us raised in western faith traditions, the ability to be still, to receive, to sit in silence, to be open, to be present, and to allow for the spontaneous arising of new possibilities in the unfolding Mystery of life, are the balancing feminine aspects of Spirit that most of us need to cultivate in this new spiritual era.

As we move down from the Third Triangle of Spirit into the Upper Triangle, we enter the energy of your Soul. This level of your being epitomizes feminine energy. Your soul is the receptive vessel for Spirit energy to flow into your unique being and to unfold into consciousness through the creative force of your life. You are a whole being emerging inside the wholeness of the Cosmos. Fr. Bede said that “every human being has an opening to this transcendent Mystery—the Divine, the Holy, the Spirit—this other dimension.” Think of this triangle as literally being the open space or funnel where we receive Spirit and give birth to our unique possibilities. Sr. Ilia Delio, OSF, PhD, is a Franciscan Sister from Washington, DC, and an American theologian specializing in science and religion with a special interest in evolution and physics. She is the author of The Unbearable Wholeness of Being: God, Evolution and the Power of Love, and teaches that "Christian life is a commitment to love, to give birth to God in one's own life and to become midwives of divinity in this evolving cosmos. We are to be wholemakers of love in a world of change." In this teaching, Sr. Delio captures the receptive, feminine, adaptive and creative power of the Soul. As Souls, we are all just funnels of Spirit in the process of becoming human in an ever-changing world.

From our Upper Triangle Soul, we funnel our unique energy through the womb of our heart, steeping our True Self in the energy of compassion as we prepare to enter into our human body or our Lower Triangle Personality, as an embodiment of our Soul which is an embodiment of Spirit. Our Personality is the active-masculine part of our being that experiences itself in movement and action in the Universe. Our Personality is a form or a vehicle through which we can experience the dynamic play of Spirit in ourselves, in each other and in the very nature of the Universe. Again, we are a whole, inside a whole, inside a whole. Our personality can never be separate from our Soul and can
